Emerson Koh is a flutist currently based in central Ohio. He is a senior at Westerville North High School and takes College Credit Plus classes full-time at The Ohio State University. Emerson currently serves as the principal flutist of the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony and the Westerville North Wind Ensemble and is the lead tenor saxophone of the Westerville North Big Band. He also plays flute and piccolo in The Ohio State University Symphonic Band. Emerson was the flute section leader for the Westerville North Marching Band in 2025, has won the Outstanding Woodwind Musician Award in 2024 and 2025, and was featured as a soloist in the 2024 (RED) and 2025 (The Invitation) competition shows. Emerson has served as the principal flutist of the 2026 OMEA All-State Orchestra, the 2025 OSU Honors Wind Symphony, the 2025 Indiana University Summer Music Clinic Cream Band and Orchestra (and Honors Recital performer), the 2025 Columbus Youth Symphonic Band, the 2024 Westerville City Schools High School Honor Band, Capital University Junior Winds from 2021-2023, and as the assistant principal flutist of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra from 2023-2024.
In 2026, Emerson placed first in the Central Ohio High School Concerto Competition hosted by the Westerville Community Bands. In 2025, he placed second in the Senior High Division of the Central Ohio Flute Association Competition and placed third in the Junior High Division in 2023. Emerson was the recipient of the College Board First-Generation Recognition Award in 2024 and the College Board School Recognition Award in 2025. Emerson currently studies flute with Randy Hester, an Eastman School of Music graduate and the principal flutist of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra from 1973-2018. Emerson is expected to graduate from Westerville North High School in May 2026 with an Arts Honors Diploma and is a prospective music education and flute performance major.
